Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my blog :-)
This week I arrived in London to begin a new life. Saying goodbye to everyone at home was bittersweet – I was sent off with so many well wishes, but at the same time I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep in touch with everyone as much as I’d like. This blog is aiming to make the experience less bitter and a little sweeter!
If all my friends and family have a genuine interest in wishing me well, why should I keep this experience to myself? Wouldn’t it be cool if I could share this experience with you, so that in some way I’m bringing you along for the ride? I think that’d be cool, and that’s why I’m writing this.
Two initial questions:
1. Why am I doing this?
2. Why are you reading this?
Why I’m doing this – moving to London, that is – is to take a calculated risk. I’m so lucky at this point in my life (e.g. financially stable, limited responsibilities, transferrable skill set) that I can pick up my things in one corner of the world and plunk them down in another. There are awesome opportunities to be had which is exciting, including plenty of travel and new career ventures.
I’m also doing this because life in Sydney was becoming easy, which was a sign that I wasn’t growing. A good job, solid network of friends and familiarity with the city are all fantastic things to have, but I felt there was more to be had. Challenging myself with a ‘life abroad’, I feel, will test my grit and make me a better person. And at the end of the day, the easy life in Sydney will always be there waiting for me whenever it is I want to go back.
Why you’re reading this – I’m guessing, is because you have an interest in my life (hopefully positive, but if you do want to see me suffer I will respect that interest also). You may like to keep posted on where I’m at in my ‘life abroad’ experience, learn about my observations and insights into the UK, or something similar.
But this is my best guess. I’d love to hear from you on what you’d like me to share. I’d really appreciate a message, comment, hate mail or any other feedback that might help me deliver a better blog.
Separate to sharing my experience living abroad, I’d also like to share my ‘urban observations’ as I live in London and travel Europe. I’m passionate about urban design and sustainability, and will be keen to share what I find with an audience.
So here we go, let’s get this blog started! I’ll aim to deliver an update fortnightly. Please subscribe to the blog or add it is a bookmark if you’d like to stay posted :-)
